The spectacular and elegant moated castle of Nunney was built in the 1370s by Sir John de la Mere, a neighbourhood knight who was beginning to acquire royal favour. The castle was considerably updated in the late 16th century and maintained for the King throughout the Civil War, but it quickly fell to Parliamentarian cannon in 1645, and the gun-damaged part of the wall didn’t completely collapse until Christmas Day 1910.
